# Preparing a Carpet Design for Tufting

Before any yarn gets pulled through cloth, a tufting design needs to be simplified, sized, and color-mapped. Skipping this step is the most common reason first carpets come out muddy or mismatched.

## 1. Reduce your colors

Tufting guns work best with clean, separated color regions — not photographic gradients. Aim for the fewest colors that still capture the design. Loopi's [Design Recoloring tool](https://www.loopi.space/client-portal/carpet-color-picker) lets you preview different palettes on your actual design before committing to yarn.

## 2. Size it to your frame

Decide your finished dimensions early, including a margin for binding and any backing overlap. If you're combining several smaller designs on one frame, the [Virtual Frame tool](https://www.loopi.space/virtual-frame) arranges them efficiently and flags when pieces are placed too close together.

## 3. Choose your pile technique

- **Cut pile** — plush, even surface, good for bold flat-color designs
- **Loop pile** — textured surface, good for subtle pattern and durability
- **Cut and loop** — combines both for sculpted detail and depth

Your choice affects both the look and the amount of yarn used, so decide before calculating materials.

## 4. Build your color library

If you tuft regularly, store your actual yarn colors — hex codes, type, and cost — in your [Yarn Library](https://www.loopi.space/client-portal/yarn-library). Saved colors show up directly in the design picker, so previews match what you can actually buy.

## 5. Calculate before you cut

Once the design, size, and pile style are locked in, run it through the [Yarn Calculator](https://www.loopi.space/yarn-calc) for an exact materials breakdown before you cut a single strand.
