# **How to Price a Tufted Rug Commission**

Underpricing is the most common mistake new tufters make. A rug priced on yarn cost and a guess at the hours almost always pays less than minimum wage once gluing, trimming and client messages are counted. This guide gives you a method you can use on every quote, so your prices are consistent and you can explain them.

## The four parts of a price

### 1. Materials

- **Yarn:** the largest material cost. Work it out from the area of each colour, your yarn type and strand count. At 18 mm cut pile, three strands of acrylic use about 2.7 kg per square metre; see [**how much yarn you need**](https://www.loopi.space/it/blog/how-much-yarn-for-tufting). Add 10 to 15 percent for testing and trimming.
- **Primary tufting cloth:** including the margin you stretch on the frame, which you pay for but do not sell.
- **Glue and secondary backing:** carpet glue for the back, plus felt or action backing.
- **Binding and finishing:** binding tape, hanging hardware for wall pieces, non-slip underlay if you include it.

### 2. Labour

This is where most underpricing happens. Count every stage, not just the time the gun is running:

- design, mock-ups and colour matching,
- client messages and revisions,
- stretching the cloth and transferring the stencil,
- tufting,
- gluing, drying and backing,
- trimming, carving and edge finishing,
- photographing, packing and shipping.

Time yourself on your next two or three rugs. Most tufters are surprised how much of the total is not tufting. Then pick an hourly rate you would accept for skilled work, not what you think a client will pay.

### 3. Overhead

The costs of being able to make rugs at all: gun wear and replacement parts, frames, studio rent or a share of your home's costs, electricity, software, card and platform fees, packaging. Adding 10 to 20 percent of materials and labour covers most small studios.

### 4. Profit

Covering your costs only gets you back to zero. A profit margin on top pays for slow months, new equipment and growth. Around 30 percent is a common starting point; raise it as demand for your work grows.

## A worked example

A client wants a 60 × 90 cm rug in three colours, acrylic, cut pile at 18 mm, for a living room floor.

| **Item** | **How** | **Cost** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Yarn | 0.54 m² × 2.7 kg/m² = 1.46 kg, plus 15% = 1.68 kg at €12/kg | €20 |
| Cloth, glue, backing, binding | Your own prices | €18 |
| Labour | 7 hours (1.5 design and client, 3 tufting, 1 gluing and backing, 1.5 finishing) at €25/h | €175 |
| Overhead | 10% of materials and labour | €21 |
| **Cost** | | **€234** |
| Profit | 30% | €70 |
| **Price** | | **€305** |

Rows are rounded to the nearest euro. That rug is 5.8 square feet, so the price works out at about €52 per square foot.

Notice where the money is: materials are under a fifth of the cost. A tufter who charged "yarn plus a bit" would have quoted under €100 for a job worth three times that.

The [**tufting price calculator**](https://www.loopi.space/it/tufting-price-calculator) runs this same method with your own numbers.

## What about per-square-foot pricing?

You will see ranges like $50 to $175 per square foot quoted for custom tufted rugs. They are a useful sense check: if your method lands far below the low end, you have probably left out hours. But a flat rate on its own misprices most rugs, because two rugs of the same size can take very different amounts of time.

A better approach: work out your price with the method above for a few typical rugs, see what per-square-foot figure they land on, and use that as a quick first estimate when someone asks "roughly how much?". Then quote the real job from its design.

## What makes a rug cost more

- **Colour count and detail.** Each colour change, fine outline and small shape adds tufting time.
- **Pile height and type.** Taller pile and sculpted cut-and-loop work use more yarn and more trimming time.
- **Wool.** Wool can double or triple the yarn cost.
- **Irregular shapes.** Cutting, binding and finishing a non-rectangular edge takes longer.
- **Floor use.** A floor rug needs a sturdier backing and more careful gluing than a wall piece.
- **Rush jobs.** If a deadline means pushing other work back, charge for it.

## Set a minimum price

Small rugs are disproportionately expensive to make: a 30 × 30 cm mat still needs a stretched cloth, a stencil, gluing, drying and finishing. Pick a minimum, the price below which you will not take a commission, and quote it for anything that would come out under it.

## Quoting with confidence

- **Send a written quote** with what is included, the number of revision rounds, the timeline and the deposit.
- **Take a deposit** before buying yarn. Many makers ask for half.
- **Do not apologise for your price.** Explain what goes into it if asked; most clients are happy once they see the work involved.
- **Raise prices as your queue fills.** A waiting list is a signal that you are too cheap.

See [**how to start a tufting business**](https://www.loopi.space/it/blog/how-to-start-a-tufting-business) for the full commission process from enquiry to delivery.

## Use a calculator, not a guess

Pricing by hand is slow and easy to get inconsistent. Loopi's [**yarn calculator**](https://www.loopi.space/it/yarn-calc) reads your design, measures how much of each colour it uses, and turns that into yarn weights and a material cost based on your own yarn prices. Add your hourly rate and markup and it gives you a quote you can send to the client.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much should I charge for a tufted rug?

Add materials, every hour of your time at a fair rate, 10 to 20 percent overhead and around 30 percent profit. For a simple 60 × 90 cm acrylic rug, that comes to about €300.

### How much does it cost to make a tufted rug?

For the 60 × 90 cm acrylic rug above, materials come to about €38. The real cost is time: that rug takes seven hours once design, gluing and finishing are counted.

### Should I charge per square foot?

Use per-square-foot figures as a first estimate and a sense check, but quote each commission from its design, because detail changes the hours far more than size alone.

### How do I price a wall hanging compared to a floor rug?

Use the same method. Wall pieces often need less backing and gluing, but more finishing on the edges and hanging hardware.

### How do I stop underpricing my rugs?

Time every stage of your next few rugs, including client messages and finishing, and price from those hours. Most underpricing comes from counting only the tufting.
