Cut Pile vs Loop Pile: Which Should You Tuft?

Every tufted rug is cut pile, loop pile or a mix of the two. The choice changes how the rug looks, how it feels underfoot, how long it lasts and how sharp your design reads. It also decides which gun you need. Here is how to choose.

What is the difference?

A tufting gun pushes a length of yarn through the backing cloth, forming a U shape on the face of the rug.

  • In cut pile, the gun snips the top of each U, so it becomes two upright ends. The surface you touch is the cut ends of the yarn.
  • In loop pile, the yarn is left as a continuous loop. The surface you touch is the curved side of the yarn.

That one difference changes almost everything else.

Cut pile: the plush default

Cut pile is what most people picture when they think of a tufted rug: dense, soft and smooth, with clean colour blocks. Because each tuft ends in cut fibres, colour edges stay crisp, which is why bold graphic designs, logos and characters are almost always cut pile.

It also carves well. Trimming and bevelling the cut ends around a shape lifts it off the surface, one of the most effective ways to add depth to a design.

Watch for: cut pile shows footprints and vacuum marks, and acrylic cut pile can flatten under furniture. Expect some shedding of loose fibres during the first weeks.

Loop pile: the durable texture

Loop pile has a firmer, more structured hand. Because the loops resist crushing, it stands up well to foot traffic, which is why so much commercial carpet is looped. Its texture also catches light differently, so it is good for subtle tone-on-tone patterns.

Watch for: loops can snag on pet claws and heels, and a pulled loop can run. Colour edges blur a little, so very fine graphic detail reads less sharply. Loop pile is usually tufted lower than cut pile.

Cut and loop together

Many of the most striking tufted rugs use both. Loop pile at one height and cut pile at another create a sculpted relief, so a design can stand out by texture alone, even in a single colour. You can:

  • outline a cut-pile shape in loop pile to give it a crisp border,
  • use loop for background and cut for the subject,
  • vary heights within one colour for a carved, tonal effect.

On screen, Loopi's Rug Studio renders a design in cut or loop pile so you can compare them before you tuft.

Which gun do you need?

Tufting guns are made as cut-pile guns, loop-pile guns, or dual guns that switch between the two. If you are buying your first gun and are unsure, a dual gun lets you try both. Most beginners start with cut pile because it hides small unevenness once the face is trimmed.

Does it change how much yarn you need?

Per tuft, no: a cut tuft and a loop at the same height use about the same length of yarn. In practice loop pile is tufted lower, so a loop rug often uses less yarn in total. The yarn guide has the figures by height and strand count, and the yarn calculator works them out for your design.

How to choose

  • A soft rug for a bedroom, or a wall piece with a bold design: cut pile.
  • A runner, entryway or office rug that will take traffic: loop pile, ideally in wool.
  • A rug where texture is the design: cut and loop.
  • A home with cats or dogs: cut pile, so claws have no loops to catch.

Frequently asked questions

Is cut pile or loop pile more durable?

Loop pile. The loops resist crushing and hold their shape under foot traffic. Cut pile in wool is also hard-wearing, but cut pile shows wear sooner.

Which is softer?

Cut pile. Its surface is the soft cut ends of the yarn.

Can I tuft loop pile with a cut-pile gun?

No. A cut-pile gun snips every stitch. You need a loop-pile gun or a dual gun set to loop.

Does loop pile use more yarn?

Not at the same height. Loop pile is usually tufted shorter, so it often uses less yarn overall.

Which is better for a beginner?

Cut pile. Trimming the face at the end evens out small inconsistencies that loop pile would show.
