# **Introducing the Loopi Quilt Designer**

Loopi started with tufting. Today it also quilts.

The [**Quilt Designer**](https://www.loopi.space/ru/quilt-designer) is a studio for composing a quilt top — from your own artwork or from a library of pieced blocks — where the per-fabric yardage and the cutting plan update as you design, rather than after. It runs entirely in your browser, needs no account, and is free to use.

![A quilt design of a sun, a crescent moon and a green hill, pieced in rust, ochre, blush and pine](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Fquilt.webp&w=1536&q=85)

**A word up front: this is experimental.** It is a new product line, released early so real quilters can push on it before we build the rest. Everything below works today, but the design lives on the device you drew it on and some of the obvious next steps aren't built yet. There's a fuller list of what that means [**at the end**](#what-experimental-means).

## Two ways in

Every quilt starts with one of two questions: *I have a picture I want to make*, or *I have a block in mind*.

![The quilt designer's opening screen offering two routes: turn a picture into a quilt, or design it block by block](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Fstart.webp&w=1536&q=85)

Either route lands you in the same studio. The choice only decides what's on the canvas when you get there.

## Turn a picture into a quilt

Upload a JPEG, PNG or WebP (up to 8 MB) and the designer separates it into fabric layers — up to twelve — then pieces it into blocks.

![The import dialog showing a photograph on the left and its pieced quilt preview on the right, with a slider for the number of fabric layers](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Fimport.webp&w=1536&q=85)

The slider chooses how many fabrics the picture becomes, and the preview on the right is the pieced quilt, not the photograph — the question at that moment is *will this still read once it's cut up*, and showing you the original answers nothing. You also set how the image sits in the grid (fill, fit or stretch), the number of rows and columns, and which block does the piecing.

That last one matters more than it looks. Plain squares give you the picture. Any other block gives it texture — and afterwards you can change the treatment layer by layer, so the sky can be flying geese while the ground stays plain.

An image doesn't have to be pieced at all. You can also bring one in as a **panel** — a single printed image laid on the quilt, or an image repeated as a pattern across an area. Panels are listed separately with their finished size and deliberately left out of the cutting plan, because you obtain them some other way.

![The layers panel listing six fabrics with the yardage and percentage of the quilt each one accounts for](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Flayers.webp&w=1536&q=85)

Once it's in, each layer gets a row: the fabric, how much of the quilt it covers, how many yards it will take, and how it's pieced. That yardage sits on the row on purpose — it's the number that decides whether a colour choice is affordable, and burying it in a separate panel is what makes people design first and cost it later.

## Design it block by block

The block library holds **32 traditional blocks**, filtered by family — stars, nine patch, log cabin, flying geese, half-square triangles, classic and plain.

![The block library open beside a sawtooth star quilt, showing thumbnails for plain square, four patch, nine patch, rail fence, pinwheel and more](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Fblocks.webp&w=1536&q=85)

Sawtooth Star, Ohio Star, Friendship Star, Churn Dash, Shoofly, Bear's Paw, Log Cabin, Courthouse Steps, Jacob's Ladder, Dutchman's Puzzle, Flock of Geese, King's Crown, Yankee Puzzle, Buckeye Beauty, Crosses and Losses, Puss in the Corner and the rest. Pick one and tap the quilt to place it, or fill the whole quilt with it in one go.

Every block is drawn from real pieced units — half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, flying geese, rectangles, squares — and each block's units cover its grid exactly. Blocks that can't be built honestly from that set, like mitered attic windows or a curved drunkard's path, are deliberately absent rather than faked.

## Set the quilt

![The layout panel with size preset, block size, rows and columns, sashing width and fabric, cornerstones, and a border round](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Flayout.webp&w=1536&q=85)

Six size presets from crib to king, or set your own grid: rows and columns up to 30, block size anywhere from 1" to 24" in half-inch steps. Turn on **sashing** and choose its width and fabric, add **cornerstones** where the sashing crosses, and stack up to **five border rounds**, each with its own width and fabric. The finished size updates underneath as you go.

## Audition fabrics

![The fabrics panel with the quilt's palette, paint mode options, swap everywhere, and shuffle](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Ffabrics.webp&w=1536&q=85)

Pull fabrics from the Loopi solids, mix a custom colour, or **photograph a real bolt and use it as a print**. A print is scaled by its printed repeat in inches and the current zoom, so a 2" floral stays a 2" floral against a 12" block however it was photographed. The photo never leaves your device.

Painting has three reaches: this patch, the whole block, or every matching block at once. There's a **swap everywhere** for exchanging one fabric for another across the entire quilt, and a **shuffle** for when you want the scrappy version.

## Check the value, not just the colour

![The same quilt rendered in grayscale, with the value check toggle active](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Fvalue-check.webp&w=1536&q=85)

Colour gets the credit, but value does the work — a quilt that fails in grayscale fails on the bed. **Value check** is one tap from every other decision, and it drops prints in favour of a flat gray on purpose: judging value structure is the one job a busy print gets in the way of.

## The cutting plan

This is the part the whole thing is built around.

![The ledger panel showing total yardage, per-fabric yardage, a cutting plan of strips and subcuts, and three warnings](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Fledger.webp&w=1536&q=85)

For every fabric you get the yardage and the cutting plan the way quilters actually cut: strips by width across the width of fabric, then the subcuts each strip yields, with the counts and the finished use spelled out — including the four-at-a-time no-waste method for geese. Every figure can be expanded to **show the working** that produced it.

Identical units are merged across the whole quilt before anything is cut, so two mirrored half-square triangles painted in opposite colourways are recognised as the same cut.

Underneath that:

- **Math settings** — usable width of fabric (40", 42" or 44") and a comfort margin of 0%, 5% or 10%.
- **Binding** — 2¼" or 2½" strips, with the strip count and total.
- **Backing** — longarm or domestic, pieced with horizontal or vertical seams or cut from 108" wideback, cheapest option first.
- **Batting** — the finished size needed, and which packaged size fits it.

And the thing it will never do is round something quietly. A cut size that falls off the ⅛" ruler grid, or a piece longer than the usable width of your fabric, surfaces as a **warning** — never as a silent adjustment. The cutting-plan button carries the count, because an unread warning is exactly what costs someone a yard of fabric.

## It works on a phone

![The quilt designer on a phone: the quilt filling the screen with a tool strip along the bottom, and the cutting plan open as a bottom sheet](https://www.loopi.space/_vercel/image?url=%2Fmedia%2Fblog%2Fquilt-designer%2Fmobile.webp&w=1536&q=85)

The floating tool rail becomes a bottom strip and the panels become sheets, because a phone has room for the design or the controls but not both — and the design has to win. The whole cutting plan is there too.

## The rest of the studio

- Name the quilt, and **undo up to fifty steps**.
- It **saves itself** to your device as you work, so closing the tab and coming back picks up where you left off.
- **Download the design as a PNG** at any point.
- Zoom, pan, and fit the whole quilt to the screen.
- Available in nine languages: English, Nederlands, Español, Deutsch, Suomi, Italiano, Русский, Українська and العربية.
- A guided tour runs the first time you open the studio on a desktop, and the help button replays it whenever you want.

## What experimental means

Concretely:

- **Your quilt is saved on this device only.** There is no account and no cloud sync, which also means clearing your browser's site data will clear your designs. Download the PNG if a design matters to you.
- **There's no printable pattern or PDF export yet.** You get the cutting plan on screen; you don't yet get a document to hand to someone else.
- **Warnings tell you, they don't fix it.** That's deliberate — we'd rather flag an awkward cut than quietly change your design — but it does mean you have to read them.
- **Screen colours are not cloth.** Order a swatch before you commit to a bolt.
- **The block library will grow**, and some blocks are missing on purpose because they can't be pieced honestly from the current unit set.

If something is wrong, missing, or just annoying, the feedback button in the studio goes straight to us and works whether or not you're signed in. Early quilts and early complaints are both genuinely useful right now.

## Try it
