Yarn Calculator

Calculate exactly how much yarn you need for your tufting projects

Overview

The Yarn Calculator helps you estimate the amount of yarn needed for your tufting projects. By analyzing your design and considering various factors like tuft density and tufting style, it provides accurate estimates to help you purchase the right amount of materials.

Step 1: Upload Your Design

Start by uploading an image of your design. The calculator works best with:

  • Clear, high-contrast images
  • Designs with well-defined color sections
  • PNG or JPG files

The tool will analyze your image to identify the colors and calculate the proportions of each color in your design.

Upload your design image

Step 2: Enter Project Specifications

Specify the physical dimensions of your project:

  • Width and Height: The actual dimensions of your rug/project in centimeters
  • Tuft Density: How close together your tufts will be (affects yarn usage)
  • Backing Fabric: The type of primary backing you're using

These specifications help calculate the total area and yarn requirements.

Step 3: Select Tufting Style

Choose the tufting technique you plan to use:

  • Cut Pile: Creates a plush, carpet-like finish
  • Loop Pile: Creates textured loops on the surface
  • Cut and Loop: Combines both techniques

Different tufting styles use different amounts of yarn, which the calculator factors into its estimates.

Step 4: Enter Cost Settings (Optional)

For pricing estimation, you can enter:

  • Cost per 100g: The average cost of your yarn
  • Additional Costs: Backing, glue, or other materials
  • Markup: Optional percentage for professional pricing

These help calculate project costs and potential pricing if you're selling your work.

Step 5: View Results

After processing, you'll see detailed breakdowns of:

  • Total yarn required in grams and skeins
  • Color-by-color breakdown of yarn quantities
  • Cost estimation for materials and total project

You can download these results as a PDF to use when purchasing materials or providing quotes to clients.

Pro Tips

For Accuracy

  • Use clear, well-defined designs for better color detection
  • Add 10-15% extra yarn as buffer for mistakes
  • Adjust tuft density based on your tufting gun's settings

For Efficiency

  • Save your calculations as PDF for future reference
  • Pre-wind yarn for each color based on calculations
  • Keep track of actual usage to refine future estimates

Virtual Frame

Optimize your tufting frame space by arranging multiple designs efficiently

Overview

The Virtual Frame tool helps you arrange multiple tufting designs on a single frame, maximizing space usage while maintaining proper spacing. It's perfect for batch production or when working with multiple small designs that you want to tuft together.

Step 1: Choose Your Frame Size

Start by selecting your tufting frame size from the dropdown:

  • 24" × 24" (60cm × 60cm) - Small frame
  • 32" × 32" (80cm × 80cm) - Medium frame
  • 40" × 40" (100cm × 100cm) - Large frame
  • 48" × 48" (120cm × 120cm) - Extra large frame

Choose the size that matches your physical tufting frame.

40" × 40" (100cm × 100cm)

Step 2: Set Safety Padding

7cm (2.8")

Padding ensures proper spacing between designs:

  • 5cm (2") - Minimal spacing for experienced tufters
  • 7cm (2.8") - Recommended for most projects
  • 10cm (4") - Extra space for beginners or complex designs

The padding appears as diagonal lines around each image. When images are too close, the lines turn orange to warn you of potential collisions.

Step 3: Upload Your Designs

Click the floating + button to upload your designs:

  • Upload 2-20 PNG images at once
  • Drag and drop or click to browse
  • Each design can be any irregular shape
  • The tool automatically arranges them efficiently

Real-world dimensions are calculated based on your frame size, displayed below each image.

Step 4: Arrange and Adjust

Each image has interactive controls (visible on hover):

  • Drag - Click and drag to reposition
  • Rotate - Use the blue handle to rotate
  • Resize - Green handle maintains aspect ratio
  • Delete - Red X button removes the image

The "Re-pack Images" button reorganizes all images optimally if needed.

Step 5: Download Your Layout

Once arranged, export your layout:

  • Download: Saves the layout as a PNG file
  • Download Mirrored: Creates a horizontally flipped version

The mirrored option is useful when transferring designs to the back of your tufting cloth, ensuring they appear correctly from the front.

Pro Tips

For Best Results

  • Group similar colored designs together
  • Place larger designs first, then fit smaller ones
  • Watch for orange padding warnings
  • Consider yarn changes when arranging

Space Optimization

  • Rotate designs to fit better
  • Use smaller padding for experienced tufting
  • Keep similar heights together for efficiency
  • Save layouts for future reference

Design Recoloring
